About the journal

diid is an open access, peer-reviewed scientific design journal
edited by Bologna University Press since 2021.
The journal was founded in 2002.

Focus and Scope

Starting from the knowledge about industrial design and the different design sectors, diid describes advanced design cultures that enable us to investigate design through the metamorphosis of capitalism, by means of anticipation, balance between different forces, complex systems, stakeholders and key actors, organizations and their mutual relations.

In recent decades, industrial design, as a discipline and practice, has lived a deep change shifting its attention from the morphological, functional, and technological aspects of products (material and immaterial) to issues related to the relationship with users, the environment, society, innovation processes and ecosystems, forms of interaction. Change is thus the key topic to be analysed and narrated, by understanding the different meanings and impacts on innovation domains.

According to this interpretation, diid keeps studying and recording what happens around design cultures and their correlation with sustainability issues, technologies, society and human behaviours. It aims to open the debate on productive thinking and how designers elaborate media, catalyze knowledge, synthesize and prototype material and immaterial artefacts, propose culture, transform and invent reality.

diid welcomes articles that cover topics including:

  • design cultures, theories, methods and practices;
  • advanced design and anticipation;
  • product design, communication design, fashion design, service design, design strategies and management;
  • interaction design, experience design, behavioural design;
  • sustainable design;
  • design education;
  • manufacturing, digital manufacturing, cultural and creative industries.

Journal Structure

The Journal is structured in three different sections:

  • “Open Debate”, edited by Guest Editors of the issue, who interpreted with an original, unique, and intriguing vision thematic focus, involving national and international authors as privileged witnesses. We hope to deepen the debate by hosting the front end of the contemporary discussions about design cultures. It contains Research and Experimentation Articles, Conversation pieces and Interviews, Visual Essays, plus reviews coherent with the main thematic focus (see Open call).
  • “Designrama” welcomes contributions from the Open Call for submissions throughout the year, in form of Research and Experimentation Articles and Conversation pieces and Interviews (see Open call).
  • “Forum and Reviews” contains for each issue the “Over the Mainstream” and “Cultural and Creative Industries” forums, plus exhibition, website, book, conference, and media reviews (see Open call).

A new format will supplement the Journal in 2023: the Special Issue related to the proceedings of the 8th International Forum of Design as a Process, held in 2022 in Bologna.

diid is a complex act that grows and evolves within our community.

Publication Frequency

The journal publishes three issues per year.

Journal History

diid was create in 2002 with the objective of filling a gap concerning scientific journals in Italy related to the study of industrial design and design. Over the last two decades diid has investigated design disciplines and practices, recording their development thanks to the great contribution of Italian and international scientific communities.

The one inaugurated in 2021, with issue no. 73, is a new phase. The plan for a new European Bauhaus for the diffusion of design cultures, the post-pandemic rebirth, the pursuit of sustainable objectives in the 2030 Agenda, digital aesthetics and humanities, the man-machine-nature relationship, the transit towards renewable energies and the relations among nine billion inhabitants on Earth in 2050, provide, among others, a vision of the following years, that could be incredibly intense and full of thought and action, therefore full of design.
